HASHEMI RAFSANJANI:

Iranian president from 1989 to 1997, Rafsanjani has been implicated before in a foreign act of terrorism. In 1997 a German court ruled that the killing of three Iranian Kurd dissidents and their translator in a Berlin restaurant in 1992 had been carried out with the knowledge of Rafsanjani.

Rafsanjani is regarded as a savvy politician who frequently changes positions -- moving from the hard-line camp to that of the moderates. He ran for president again in 2005, but lost to hard-liner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He now chairs the Expediency Council which arbitrates between parliament and the clerical establishment.

ALI FALLAHIAN:

A former Intelligence Minister, Fallahian is a middle ranking cleric who has been accused of involvement in two cases of assassination. In 1997 a German court ruled that the killing of three Iranian Kurd dissidents in a Berlin restaurant had been ordered by Fallahian. Prosecutors had indicted him for the assassination, but he evaded justice by staying in Iran. The Iranian investigative journalist Akbar Ganji accused Fallahian of involvement in the 1998 murders of five political dissidents. Fallahian denied involvement. The Intelligence Ministry blamed the murders on "rogue agents" and a court convicted little-known officials of some of the killings. Fallahian graduated from a seminary in Qom that is widely seen as a breeding ground of Islamic militants.

ALI AKBAR VELAYATI:

Velayati ran the Foreign Ministry for nearly 16 years -- December 1981 to August 1997 -- making him the longest-serving foreign minister in Iranian history. Like Fallahian, Velayati was among Iranian officials indicted by German prosecutors for the 1992 slaying of three Iranian Kurdish dissidents in a Berlin restaurant. Trained as a pediatrician, he is currently an adviser of foreign affairs to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

MOHSEN RABBANI:

A middle ranking cleric, Rabbani was the cultural attache at the Iranian Embassy in Buenos Aires at the time of the 1994 attack on the Jewish cultural center in the city. Argentina accused him of involvement in the bombing and issued an international warrant for his arrest in 2003. Rabbani was also implicated in a terrorist attack on the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires in 1992.

IMAD MOUGHNIEH:

The only non-Iranian on the Argentine list, Moughnieh is one of the most sought-after terrorist suspects in the world. The United States has put him on its list of Most Wanted terrorists with a bounty of US$25 million. He is a Lebanese Shiite Muslim who worked in intelligence for the Hezbollah militant group. He is wanted for his alleged role in the kidnapping of Westerners in Lebanon in the 1980s and suicide attacks on the U.S. Embassy and a U.S. Marine base in Lebanon -- bombings that killed more than 260 Americans. His whereabouts are not known but U.S. officials suspect he moves between Lebanon, Iran and Syria. Hezbollah officials refuse to discuss Moughnieh.

HADI SOLEIMANPOUR:

He was Iran's ambassador to Argentina at the time of the 1994 attack. He later left the diplomatic service and studied at university in Britain. At Argentina's request, British police arrested him. He was released on bail, partly paid by Iran. Eventually Britain rejected the extradition request, with the Home Office saying there was not enough evidence for him to be sent to Argentina.

MOHSEN REZAEI:

Led the elite Revolutionary Guards during the 1980-88 war with Iraq, Rezaei retired from the military and entered politics. He is now spokesman of the Expediency Council.

AHMAD VAHIDI:

Vahidi is regarded as the father of Iran's missile program. He is a general in the Revolutionary Guards, but little other information is publicly available.

AHMAD REZA ASGHARI:

Asghari served as a third secretary in the Iranian Embassy in Buenos Aires, but he is believed to have been linked to the Revolutionary Guards. Not much else is publicly known about him.
