01/08/2011 | Guatemala Readies Security Plan for Elections

Inside Costa Rica

Guatemala - The Ministry of the Interior is preparing a strategic plan to ensure security in the September 11 general elections in Guatemala.

According to Interior Minister Carlos Menocal, the program includes risk maps, taking into account violent incidents in previous elections, as well as the characteristics of criminality in some regions of the country.

The deadline for delivering the program to the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) is August 8.

Menocal cited the east, north and northwestern territories as those with high risk, due to actions carried out by organized crime, including threats to candidates.

The official said that representatives from the ministries of Home Affairs, Education, Communications and Defense as well as TSE judges have held work sessions every two weeks to discuss the development of the plan. Issues such as voting paper control, security in departments with a high number of conflicts, and the protection of over 2,500 polling stations were analyzed in those meetings.
