24/04/2013 | China Earmarks $31.5 Million For Grenada Stadium Project

Caribbean Journal- Staff

China’s government has earmarked $31.49 million for the rebuilding of the National Athletic and Football Stadium in Grenada, according to Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell.

The project is part of what Mitchell said was a major push on improving the country’s sporting infrastructure, including the construction of the Kirani James Mini Stadium in St John and lighting for night activities.

“This year the top priority is the rebuilding of the National Athletics and Football Stadium,” Mitchell said in a government statement this week.

The Kirani James Mini Stadium, named after Grenada’s young gold medalist, will represent a transformation of the Cuthbert Peters Park in St John.

Grenada will also be launching a Community Sports Programme aimed at “encouraging mass participation by all our people in sports, and bringing sports to the villages and communities,” Mitchell said.

The programme will be launched in conjunction with sporting associations and parish sports councils, he said.
