Venezuela betrayed — missed chance to expose regime
The Netherlands’ decision to release powerful retired Venezuelan general Hugo Carvajal in Aruba, arrested Wednesday at the request of US law enforcement, is a boon to the narcostate in Caracas. It will make it easier for the Obama administration to continue ignoring the corrupt and repressive regime in Venezuela.

Argentina - Kirchner stifling news media in Argentina
While visiting Argentina a few years ago, just as president Néstor Kirchner was defending the biggest default in history, I saw a televised government message that concluded with the phrase, “Argentina . . . A serious country” ( “Un país en serio”). At the time, I dismissed the ad as more farcical than Orwellian, thinking that a government more obsessed with its image than with reality is its own worst enemy. Unfortunately, such a regime finds enemies elsewhere — starting with any independent journalist or media outlet that refuses to toe the party line.

Venezuela’s ‘Cubanochavista’ electoral machine
As the facts behind Nicolás Maduro’s fabricated electoral “victory” on April 14 are disclosed, his legitimacy and ability to govern will be decimated. Reams of confidential official documents obtained from Venezuelan sources reveal the existence of a sophisticated political machine — developed and managed by Cuban advisors — that gives Chavista party bosses an unfair advantage in mobilizing their voters and manipulating election results.

US - Opinion: Is Mexico Our Ally or Our Enemy?
Former Mexican president Vicente Fox’s dramatic declaration last Friday that his nation should seek a truce with vicious narco-trafficking gangs draws attention to a critical issue as Mexicans consider what kind of country they want to leave their children.

Opinion: Without Chavez, Venezuelans May Have a Future
The struggle for the future of Venezuela after Hugo Chávez may already have begun. But, millions of Venezuelans have been holding their next breath wondering whether Chávez is drawing his last. Silent video and still photos released from Cuba late Tuesday are not terribly convincing.

Is there a Chavez terror network on America’s doorstep?
President Obama’s trip to South America has showcased promising partnerships in Brazil and elsewhere. His visit, however, should also focus attention in the region and within his administration on the fact that Iran and Venezuela are conspiring to sow Tehran’s brand of proxy terrorism in the Western Hemisphere.

What Chávez wants with us
Deflecting fresh evidence that his regime is hosting nearly 40 Colombian guerrilla training camps, Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chávez warned that in case of a yanqui invasion he would not send "another drop of oil to the United States."

Colombians Opt for Strong U.S. Ties
This past Sunday, Colombian voters defied predictions and opted by a wide margin for the hand-picked successor of President Alvaro Uribe, a stalwart U.S. ally. When Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visits Colombia next Wednesday, she can show that we value this relationship by pledging to press for ratification of a bilateral trade agreement that has been languishing in the Congress for over three years.

El Salvador- Election Could Hand Power to Leftists
President Antonio Saca of El Salvador has helped to bring unprecedented growth and reform to his country, and he has been a strong ally of the United States. But in this year's presidential elections, the leftist-front turned political party Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) has put up a strong fight against the ruling Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA). If the FMLN wins this year, one hopes that the party respects El Salvador's democracy and does not fall into the authoritarian populist traps of its friends in Venezuela and Bolivia.

Lula Can Make 2008 a Very Good Year
Every year, the venerable U.S. newsmagazine, Time, chooses an important global protagonist as its "Person of the Year." Explaining their choice of Russian president Vladimir Putin as the choice for 2007, Time's editors noted the dramatic impact that the controversial leader has had in restoring the self-esteem of an important nation. Anticipating criticism of their choice of the Russian autocrat, they concede that Putin "stands, above all, for stability--stability before freedom, stability before choice. . . ."

A New President, a New Paradigm
U.S. policy in Latin America and the Caribbean always seems to inspire criticism: Too much, too little, too late. Back off. Get in the game. Don't just stand there, do something. Don't do something, just stand there.

It's Our Drug War, Too: How America and Mexico Can Defeat the Cartels
U.S. and Mexican authorities are nearing agreement on an aid package to support Mexico's courageous new offensive against the deadly drug syndicates that threaten both our nations. The stakes are high for the United States: We depend on Mexico as a cooperative neighbor and trade partner, and most of the marijuana and as much as 90 percent of the cocaine consumed in this country pours over our southern border.

Mexico’s Last Chance - Can Felipe Calderón Deliver the Goods?
By the narrowest of margins in the July 2 elections, Mexicans apparently have backed away from a precipice and won a precious second chance to save their country. Assuming the results are certified by September 6, Mexico’s political class, led by president-elect Felipe Calderón, must now deliver a reform agenda that will both sustain economic growth and overcome the structural poverty that keeps that nation from realizing its full potential. If the political class fails, it will forfeit Mexico’s future, converting the United States’s southern neighbor into a chronic problem rather than a thriving partner.

What Would a Democratic Congress Mean for US Latin American Policy?
On the key issues where Congress has an important role to play in foreign policy--considering trade agreements and conducting oversight--a Democratic take over of the House or Senate would be an unfortunate development for Latin America. First, the Democratic caucus is absolutely allergic to trade agreements.

Launching an "Opportunity Partnership" in the Americas
The United States has gone around the world seeking to address challenges to our security and prosperity, but a significant opportunity is readily available closer to home. Helping this country’s fastest growing trade partners and top energy suppliers right here in the Western hemisphere achieve and institutionalize open, competitive economies will produce a century’s worth of prosperity for the United States and its natural partners. Like-minded governments in the Americas should work together to launch an “Opportunity Partnership” that would sustain a reform agenda and alleviate the region’s chronic poverty by empowering the poor both economically and politically.
