26/05/2012 | Argentina - Argentina envoy seeks increase in bilateral trade relations

Daily Times - Staff

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Argentina have great potential to increase bilateral trade, Argentinean Ambassador to Pakistan Rodolfo J Martin-Saravia said on Friday.

Addressing a reception, which the embassy hosted to commemorate the 202nd Independence Revolution of Argentina, the ambassador said that he wishes ever-growing prosperity for Pakistan and was looking forward to strengthening economic relations. He said that both the countries should work together to foster stability in the region and around the world.

On May 25, 1810, Argentina began the political movement that ultimately led to independence from the Kingdom of Spain, he said.

This anniversary constituted a most formidable occasion to renew the bonds of friendship between Pakistan and Argentina.

The Argentine ambassador invited many of his Pakistani friends, including federal and state ministers, members of the National Assembly, politicians and Argentinean nationals working or living in and around the capital.

He added, “It is you, my friends, who have made the relations between Argentina and Pakistan stronger, not me. Moreover, you have welcomed me not only into your offices, but into your homes and into your hearts as well.”

Furthermore, the ambassador made reference to the sovereignty dispute with the United Kingdom over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas. He quoted Argentinean Foreign Minister Hector Timerman, as saying, “Argentina is the only South American country that has a part of its territory still in the hands of a colonial power and we cannot take this lightly.” He added, “It is unavoidable for me to mention this anachronistic colonial situation to my Pakistani friends who have suffered them until 1947.”
