05/08/2009 | Street protests called for Ahmadinejad's swearing-in Wednesday

DEBKA Staff

In defiance of beefed up security, opposition groups have called for demonstrators to gather in front of the Majlis in Tehran and other cities Wednesday, Aug. 5, when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is sworn in for a second term as Iranian president.

DEBKAfile's Iranian sources report that a number of deputies will boycott the session in protest of the government crackdown on demonstrations against alleged July 12 election fraud and the abuses of detained protesters who went on trial Saturday Aug. 2.

The White House, German chancellor's office and the French Elysee have announced they will abstain from congratulating the new Iranian president.

Scattered outbreaks in north Tehran accompanied the ceremony Sunday at which Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's endorsement of Ahmadinjejad's dispute reelection.
