While nearly all Pakistanis see terrorism as a major problem in their country, they have become less concerned over the last year that extremists will take over Pakistan. Fewer see the Taliban, and especially al Qaeda, as a threat than did so a year ago, although most Pakistanis continue to express negative opinions about both groups.
America's image in Pakistan is poor, with just 17% offering a favorable view of the U.S. Roughly six-in-ten consider the U.S. an enemy. Moreover, support for U.S. involvement in the fight against extremists in Pakistan has waned in the past year, and Pakistanis show little support for the war in neighboring Afghanistan.
Pakistanis' worries about their neighbor and longtime rival India continue. More express concern about the external threat from India than about the internal threat posed by extremist groups. Still, most Pakistanis say they want better relations with both India and the U.S.
The report, based on a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center's Global Attitudes Project among 2,000 Pakistanis from April 13 to 28, 2010, also provides an in-depth look at ratings of major political leaders and institutions, attitudes toward suicide bombing, and views about law, religion, and society.
