14/04/2011 | Africa - Egypt's former president investigated

Al Jazeera - Staff

Egypt detains former president and two sons over allegations of corruption and abuse of authority.

Hosni Mubarak, the former Egyptian president, is being questioned while in hospital in Sharm El-Sheikh over his role in the deaths of protesters and allegations of corruption during his 30-year rule.

His two sons Alaa and Gamal are also in detention for 15 days, and they will be questioned about allegations of corruption, abuse of power and using force against protesters during the revolution.

Pro-democracy protesters have demanded that Mubarak, his family and the former leadership be put on trial and held accountable for the deaths of peaceful protesters.

But while many welcome the arrests, revolutionaries say they will be watching the legal proceedings carefully.

Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr reports.
