28/12/2012 | Honduras to open commercial office in China

Houston Chronicle Staff

Honduran President Porfirio Lobo says his government will open a trade office in China as a step toward establishing full diplomatic relations.

Honduras is one of a small group of countries, including several in Central America, that have diplomatic relations with Taiwan and not with China.

Lobo says, "in the 21st century, one can't keep thinking that expanding relations with one country means being the enemy of another." Opponents say they don't want to show a lack of appreciation for aid received from Taiwan in the past.
