01/05/2006 | Spanish Language Rewrite of US National Anthem
Sher Zieve
A rewritten Hispanic version of the US National Anthem--the Star Spangled Banner--was released on Thursday. The melody remains somewhat the same but, the title and lyrics have been altered.
A group of Hispanic recording stars unveiled the “new” US national anthem anthem for Latinos titled "Nuestro Himno" or "Our Anthem." They also changed some of the lyrics to “soften references to war”. The true national anthem lyrics are: “And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.”
The altered Hispanic version of the lyrics include: “In the fierce combat, the sign of victory, the flame of battle in step with liberty through the night it was said it was being defended.”
Other changes and inclusions to the new Hispanic anthem version is the phrase: "we are equal, we are brothers."
The grandson of Francis Scott Key, who wrote the US national anthem, Charles Key said: "I think it’s a despicable thing that someone is going into our society from another country and changing our national anthem.”
