08/05/2011 | Afghanistan - Taliban attack several government buildings in Afghan city

Dpa

Armed insurgents were on Saturday attacking government buildings in the southern Afghanistan city of Kandahar, officials said, in a series of coordinated strikes that included at least five suicide bombings.

One soldier and one civilian were killed and 29 were injured in the attacks, which were still ongoing, Tooryali Wesa, the provincial governor told a press conference.

Taliban spokesman Qari Mohammad Yousif Ahmadi said dozens of their fighters, including suicide bombers, had attacked the government buildings.

Residents said they heard more than a dozen blasts as well as the sounds of gunfire for more than seven hours. Shops across Kandahar city, a former Taliban stronghold, remained shut while helicopters fired from above.

The militants seized a school and hotel near a government complex in the city centre, and fired rockets and bullets at the governor's office, municipality and a police compound, provincial officials said.

Wesa said six attackers had been killed so far, while five explosive-laden vehicles were used in the multi-pronged assaults.

NATO said in a statement that several Afghan and NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) buildings, the headquarters of the Afghanistan national chief of police, the transportation police headquarters, and other police stations were attacked.

'Reporting indicates that more than five suicide bombers utilizing vehicle-borne explosive devices were involved in the attack,' the statement said. 'According to reports, none of the insurgent attacks breached the perimeters of any of the compounds.'

Taliban spokesman Ahmadi claimed their fighters killed and wounded about 116 Afghan security forces and six foreign troops.

He said some of the fighters were former inmates and among nearly 500 prisoners who escaped from Kandahar jail late last month.

President Hamid Karzai condemned the attacks, saying the militants appeared to be seeking revenge for the death of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, who was killed by US forces in Pakistan.

Bin Laden's death was a major blow to the terrorist network, his statement said, and that by killing 'civilians in Kandahar' they were trying to take revenge on 'innocent people.'

The Kandahar attacks came hours after the Taliban said in a statement that bin Laden died a martyr's death, which would 'give a new impetus' to the fight against the United States and its allies.

Ahmadi said Saturday's attacks were part of the new spring offensive launched at the beginning of the month.
