01/02/2011 | Mexican gangs using catapults to launch marijuana packages into U.S.

Drug smugglers are using an ancient invention as a new way to move marijuana across the U.S. border.

U.S. National Guard troops operating a remote surveillance system at the Naco Border Patrol Station observed several people launching packages over the fence into Arizona.

A Mexican army officer said the 3-yard tall catapult was found about 20 yards from the border on a flatbed towed by an SUV.

The officer said the catapult was capable of launching 4.4 pounds of marijuana at a time. He said soldiers seized 35 pounds of marijuana, the vehicle and the catapult. The smugglers left before they could be captured.

A second, very similar catapult was discovered near Agua Prieta, another border town.
